Gridley Flying Service Given Passenger Permit
WASHINGTON -(AP)- Fourteen small air transport companies in Michigan, including the Gridley Flying Service of Ypsilanti, have been recognized by the Civil Aeronautics Board to supplement regularly scheduled airline service by carrying freight and passengers.
The companies have received letters of registration since June under new regulations governing the operation of non-scheduled carriers and placing them under the supervision of the Board.
The new regulations required letters of registration to be obtained by companies already operating as well as new concerns. The carriers, which may carry cargo but not passengers overseas, must comply with federal safety standards.
Owners of the Gridley Flying Service are Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gridley, who in 1946 purchased the air field formerly known as the Ypsilanti airport, located one-half mile north of US-112 on US-23. In the past, the Service, which has a fleet of five planes, has been training student pilots. Before moving to the Ypsilanti field, it was located at the Ann Arbor City Airport.
Under the new registration, Mrs. Gridley says, the Service also will offer cargo and passenger service to places anywhere in the United States or Canada.
