Woman Here Gives Birth To Triplets

The stork worked overtime in Ann Arbor this morning as triplet daughters were born at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. James Handy of 606 Wilton Ct.

Hospital authorities believes that the triplets are the first in Ann Arbor in about 20 years.

The girls, who have not as yet been weighed or named, arrived at 11:03, 11:06 and 11:08 this morning.

Dr. Robert C. Ideson, who attended Mrs. Handy, said the triplets appeared to be “doing well” and that the mother was resting comfortably.

All three were described by a nurse as having given "good lusty cries” when they were ushered into the world.

The Handys first were advised of the possibility of a multiple birth in January. Although they were not due until May, Mrs. Handy who is 30, was told that the babies would probably make an appearance about a month early. The mother entered the hospital Saturday.

The family, who just moved into a two bedroom house on the west side of town, have two other children. There is a seven-year-old boy, James Carleton Handy III, and a four-year-old girl, Maureen Estelle.

The father is an accountant employed at King-Seeley.

As far as the parents can determine, there have been no other triplet births in the family, although several generations back twins were reported.
