He Had Operated Appliance Dealership In City Since 1934
H. P. Johnson, 63, owner and operator of the H. P. Johnson Co., an appliance store at 209-211 S. Fourth Ave., died last night at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after a four-day illness.
His home was at 2021 Ferdon Rd.
He was born Oct. 8, 1898 in Ludington, a son of John G. and Francis I. Gage Johnson. He lived in Detroit from 1917 to 1932 and worked as a salesman for the following firms: Burroughs adding machine company of Detroit; Altorfer Brothers, Co., Peoria, Ill., washing machine manufacturers, and the 1900 Corp., of Binghamton, N. Y., also washing machine manufacturers.
He also was employed by the General Electric Supply Corp. of Detroit.
Opened Own Firm
After coming to Ann Arbor in 1932, he was a salesman for Calkins-Fletcher Co. here for two years before he opened his own business as an appliance dealer. He had operated the store, a franchised dealership in General Electric products since 1934.
He was active in and was one of the founders of the National Radio and Television Dealers Association. He also was a member of the merchandise panel of the association.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the local First Presbyterian Church; the American Institute of Management; a charter member of the Optimist Club of Ann Arbor; a member of Golden Rule Lodge No. 159, F&AM, Washtenaw Chapter No. 6, RAM, Ann Arbor Council No. 86, R&SM, and of Ann Arbor Commandery No. 13, Knights Templar.
He also was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Detroit. In 1954 Mr. Johnson was elected to "Who's Who of Commerce and Industry."
From 1950-55 he was a member of the board of directors of Sparks-Withington Co., Jackson.
Wife Survives
On Jan. 30, 1954, he married Helen P. Hickey of Ann Arbor. She survives.
Also surviving are a step-daughter, Jacqueline Ann Hickey of Ann Arbor; three brothers, Allan of St. Paul, Minn., William of Detroit and Earl of Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters, Mrs. Maybelle Berry of Scottsville, Mich., Mrs. Harry Simpson of Detroit and Mrs. Alfred Weir of Detroit and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Muehlig Chapel. The Rev. William P. Lemon will officiate. Graveside services at Forest Hill Cemetery will be conducted by members of Ann Arbor Commandery No. 13, Knights Templar. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of his son, John (Jack) F. Johnson who preceded him in death on May 10, 1952. Friends may call at the Muehlig Chapel.
