OL’ SWAMI SELECTS M, MSU

By Charles Chamberlain

CHICAGO (AP)—Spooks are supposed to come out this Halloween week but they’ve been on the Ol’ Swami’s shoulders all the way along. They cost him a couple of games last week, leaving him 30-15 for .667. If he doesn’t get caught in the propwash of a broom, here’s how the gremlins should bounce this time:

Michigan 40, Wisconsin 20—The Badger romper room boys—sophs Neil Graff, Roger Jaeger, Al Hannah and Alan Thompson—are getting over teething. But Michigan has too many weapons, the latest being rookie Bill Taylor. In his first starting assignment he ripped 151 yards and scored three times in the 35-9 rout of Minnesota. It’s also Wolverine homecoming.

Ohio State 42, Northwestern 13—Purdue shot the Wildcats out of the clouds with a thud and now they will be stomped on by the nation’s finest. It’s another TV massacre as the Cats re-enact Custer’s Last Stand before homecomers.

Michigan State 28, Indiana 26—This is a game between unpredictable coming off stunning losses last week. The Hoosiers lost the ball six times to the Badgers and the Spartans turned it over five times to the Hawkeyes. If they can get over this trick-or-treat it could be a tossup. Give MSU the edge because of homecoming.

Iowa 27, Minnesota 21—November is supposed to be the magical month for the Gophers when Murray Warmath’s coaching starts paying off. So far you can’t knock his field goal teaching. Pocket passer Mike Cilek is ready again to take the Hawkeyes in if Larry Lawrence’s shoulder doesn’t hold up.

Purdue 42, Illinois 10—Marvelous Mike Phipps will give the Illini fits as the old grads look on in Champaign. Among other things he has hurled 15 touchdown passes. Another long afternoon is a long season for winless Illinois.

Notre Dame 48, Navy 3—This is Notre Dame’s longest sustained rivalry. Coach Ara Parseghian will empty his bench, but it won’t keep the Irish from emptying their guns against the weak Middies. Their only victory came last week 10-0 over Virginia.
