Bus Proposal Campaigners Being Recruited
February 23, 1973

A small army of volunteers trained to explain to residents the transportation system Ann Arbor voters will ballot on April 2 is being recruited by the citizens committee supporting the system.

Sally Vinter, chairwoman of the committee, says 65 volunteers are already on board and she hopes to end up with 300 persons working for the passage of the 2.5 mills the city is seeking to establish the transit system.

Mrs. Vinter says the purpose of the campaign is to help voters understand the details of the system. "If the voters understand the system, we will have an overwhelming 'yes' vote on April 2," she said.

She added that in planning the campaign the committee has decided to vary from past approaches in presenting issues to the public. Instead of relying solely on the support of well-known local persons, the committee is seeking to concentrate on the use of volunteers to talk with their neighbors about the proposed system.

The advantages of this approach, she said, are that people who are interested in using the system are already motivated to work for the system; people who would like to get involved in community activities, but aren't asked, are given a chance to contribute regardless of political affiliation; volunteers will develop new ideas and the campaign will not be costly, requiring only a few large ads at the end of the campaign.

Mrs Vinter also says briefing meetings for volunteers will be held at 10 am Feb. 27 at the Public Library; 7:30 pm. Feb. 2 at the Ann Arbor Federal Savings branch, corner of Pauline and Stadium; and 10 am March 6 at the Public Library.

These sessions will consist of a detailed description of the system, questions and answers, practice interviewing, description of the jobs to be done, and new ideas for the program. Each volunteer will be equipped with a badge, notebook and a fact sheet.
