"Mereywood," says a former patient, is just like a regular hospital. There's no stigma attached to stay there."
The former patient, who also spent some time at Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital, cites another contrast
THERE ARE no bars at Mercywood. The rooms are private and semi-private. The nurses and nurses aides are helpful and give the impression that they care.
"Nobody shouts at Mereywood, People speak in low voices. I carry the impression of a quiet mausoleum-type atmosphere. Drugs, readily available, keep you feeling mellow.
"And they like to keep you busy by putting you on a plan - physical therapy, occupational therapy, ete. You're working out in the gym, shooting baskets, knitting or playing cards."
If she had a choice and needed to return to one of the facilities for further treatment, which would sbe select?
“AS MUCH as I hated it at Ypsilanti, I would go back there. Why? Because the length of your stay doesn't depend on your Blue Cross Insurance. In a mental hospital, you know you're not well and you want to stay inside until somebody tells you you're OK. You can do that at Ypsilanti State."
