Arnets hosts inscribing of astronaut monument
About 50 members of the Monument Builders' Association of Michigan gathered at Arnets Monuments Thursday to inscribe a monument in honor of astronauts Roger Chaffee and Greg Jarvis, both of whom died in space-related accidents. At left, Wesley Frederick, of Caro, makes some measurements while preparing the monument for cutting. The monument, a triangular shaped, six-foot tall block of black granite, will be donated to the Michigan Space Center in Jackson. It will be dedicated on Jan. 28, the one-year anniversary of the Challenger disaster, and will sit in front of the Space Center by the flagpole. The $10,000 monument is being donated free of charge by the monument builders. Two facets will have etched photographs and biographical information of the two astronauts. The third facet will have a copy of the poem "Flight," which many people associate with the space program. In etching the monument, the group learned a new lettering process using a combination of photography and a laser beam to cut a portrait in the granite. Larry Arnet, owner of Arnets Monuments, has been secretary/treasurer of the builders' association for the last 27 years, and his father held the same position for 22 years before. The decision to donate a monument to the Space Center was made at the monument builders' convention at Webers Inn in early December.
