Steinke, Gladys Kiser Gray Age 93, died on February 23, 2003, after several years of declining health. She was born April 11, 1909, in Fostoria, Ohio, the second child of Wesley Beech and Zora Kiser Gray. From her early childhood onward she lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She attended Jones School and Ann Arbor High School, graduating in 1928. She pursued a career in cosmetology and owned her own beauty shop, The Blue Wig, in downtown Ann Arbor until her retirement in 1962. In 1933 she married Alfred E.F. Steinke, a University of Michigan student athlete from Benton Harbor. For many years they enjoyed the people and activities involved in breeding and training beagles for field trial competition. Alfred died in 1973. They had one child, Carol Burton of Ann Arbor. Gladys was one of six children. Her death was preceded by that of her brothers, Daniel and Robert Gray, and her sisters Beulah Gary and Lucille Tidswell. Her youngest sister, Florence Wint, survives. Also surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Timothy Burton; her grandchildren James L. McNaughton Jr., (Michelle Mack), Patricia Gray McNaughton Saunders (Townsend, Jr.) and Andrew R. McNaughton (Debra); her great-grandchildren, Tassia Gray Saunders and Townsend Saunders III; twelve nieces and nephews; and many special friends who always maintained caring contact with her over the years, particularly James L. McNaughton, Sr., Alberta Burns, and Robert Keating. Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held at a later date. Gladys always knew she was generously blessed with wonderful friends and family. She would have been delighted to think she was an inspiration for the laughter and camaraderie she so loved. In lieu of flowers, therefore, her family requests that she be remembered by friendly gatherings and/or donations to charities of choice. They would enjoy hearing about any such memorial expressions by mail to: Gladys Steinke Family, P.O. Box 130541, Ann Arbor, MI 48113, or
