Council to discuss Pall toxins cleanup

The Ann Arbor City Council will get an update on the Pall Life Sciences contamination at a Monday work session.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. on the second floor of city hall, 100 N. Fifth Ave.

In 1966, the company, then Gelman Sciences, Inc., began using 1,4 dioxane in the manufacturing of medical filters. The used dioxane was dumped in unlined lagoons and sprayed onto soil and began seeping into the ground.

Gelman, now owned by Pall Life Sciences, is based in Scio Township.

In 1985, dioxane contamination was discovered in 30 water-supply wells north of the Gelman property. As of February 2004, more than 70 contaminated wells have been identified.

The cleanup has been the subject of an ongoing legal battle. Also at the meeting Monday, the council will be updated on the city’s Energy Commission report and the Water Plant Master Plan results.
