Regarding: Technical Enhancement

Patron Comment: Your login page and the request for password page should be handled on a secure connection.

AADL Reply: Thank you for taking the time to contact us about our catalog login and request for password pages. We apologize for the delay in our response. Placing these screens behind a secure connection is something we've wanted to do for years; unfortunately, it is not possible with our current catalog system, which serves those pages. Shortcomings such as these are among the reasons we have selected a new catalog and automation system. We are currently in the process of migrating to this new system, and it is planned to go live in July. This new system will offer us, among many other new features, the ability to secure the patron login screens. It will also support usernames and passwords instead of library card numbers and PINs, making login even easier. Thanks again for your feedback, and thanks for using the Library!

Regarding: branch building

Patron Comment: Please include a provision for book return from within one's car, at the new library.

AADL Reply: Thank you for contacting the Ann Arbor District Library with your suggestion. I wish that I could tell you that a drive up return will be included at the new branch on Oak Valley Drive, but I cannot. There are many limitations on the pedestrian and vehicular approaches at any site, primarily in the interest of safety, and many factors are considered by all parties when a final site plan is developed and approved by local permitting agencies. We do have a dedicated lane outside of the major traffic flow for vehicles to pull into so that one may exit a car and walk under a covered area to an outside drop that will be built into the wall of the building. I realize that this is not the ideal solution, but on this site it was the best that we could accomplish. Thank you for taking the time to let me know how we can serve you better.

Patron Comment: I read in the Ann Arbor News that some of the library board think that we should consider closing the West Branch library. We STRONGLY oppose closing the branch. It is a great library and a great resource for the west side community. The staff is great, the location is convenient, and the changes that have been made to the children's room are really nice. The branch is always full of people. If anything it needs to be enlarged, not closed down. The location over by Target is not a close substitute for those of us on the northwest side. No one wants to get into the traffic over near A2-Saline Road.

AADL Reply: Thank you for contacting the Ann Arbor District Library in response to the recent AA News article on the opening of a new branch on Oak Valley Drive. I want to reassure you that the Library Board has not made any determination concerning the future of a branch in Westgate Mall. As you state so very well in your comment card, it is a very busy branch and is often crowded. We do not anticipate the opening of a branch on Oak Valley Drive to impact the use of West in the negative. I was asked a direct question by the reporter and I answered it directly. If West is not used, of course, we would not keep it open. Unfortunately, that was made a headline. Library administration and the Board understand that a larger facility is needed to serve our northwest patrons and we are actively seeking options for expanding service in that direction, as well as, to the northeast. Thank you again for contacting me and I hope that I have reassured you about library service on the west side of Ann Arbor. If you have any other concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 327-4263.

Patron Comment: My wife and I visited Malletts Creek for the first time. We were NOT favorably impressed. Beautiful, high-tech and not much emphasis on books. We are much more impressed with our NE branch.

AADL Reply: Thank you for taking the time to fill out a customer service card for the library and I apologize for not responding to you sooner. I am glad that you are pleased with your experience at NEB and am sorry that you do not feel the same emphasis on books at Malletts Creek. While I know statistically that more materials are "owned" in the Malletts Creek collection than the NEB collection, more materials are also circulated from Malletts Creek than NEB. We have found it a definite challenge to keep materials on the shelves at Malletts Creek. We are working to address that each month that we are open while adjusting to the unprecedented demand that we are experiencing at Malletts Creek. I think that you will ultimately be pleased with how we resolve the collection demand at Malletts Creek and when the day comes for a new branch to be built for our northeast area community, we will have learned a few good lessons and will be more prepared for the use a new library receives in Ann Arbor. Thank you again for letting me know how we can improve.
