Mayor Manly Gets a Big Plum.
Mayor Charles H. Manly was on Wednesday elected commander of the Soldiers' Home in Grand Rapids by the board of managers in Lansing. The position will require him to remove from this city and for the next two years the mayor will be a resident of Grand Rapids. He has much work before him, for the Soldiers' Home, from all accounts, has been greatly lacking in the needed discipline. The mayor will make an excellent commander. The salary of the office is $1500 a year besides the living of the commander and family. It will be seen than this is one of the best paying of the state offices. It will probably necessitate the removal of the mayor from the city before the expiration of his term of office, in which case the president of the council, F.A. Howlett, will become acting mayor.
