John (Jack) Drake, 36, who was on the staff of the University printing department for the past 15 years, and was active in city baseball, died suddenly this morning at his home, 2909 Canterbury. The son of Donald (Dobbie) Drake, a longtime teacher and coach at Ann Arbor High School, and Ruth Scovill Drake, he was born June 29, 1928, in Ypsilanti. He was graduated from Ann Arbor High School and attended Eastern Michigan University. He was director of baseball umpires for the city leagues for many years and supervised Ann Arbor softball leagues this past year. Mr. Drake was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Ann Arbor, past exalted ruler of the Ann Arbor Elks Lodge No. 325, and a member of the Spirit of '76 Club. He is survived by his wife, Pat Cleavinger Drake whom he married on Aug. 27, 1949; a son, Dee, and a daughter, Kay, both at home; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald (Dobbie) Drake of Battle Creek. Mr. Drake retired as director of the Battle Creek Recreation Department last year, a post he held since leaving Ann Arbor High School in 1952. Three brothers, Donald, head football coach at Kalamazoo Central High School, David of St. Clair Shores, and Richard in the U. S. Navy stationed in California, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Muehlig Chapel with the Rev. James H. Middleton officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel beginning Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to the local March of Dimes or to the Michigan Heart Association.
