G. P. Collins, Merchant, Dies At 87
Guernsey P. Collins, 87, co-owner of the Collins Shop, a women's clothing store at State and Liberty, died this morning at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after a two-week illness. His home was at 1693 W. Stadium Ct.
In 1928 he and Mrs. Collins opened the Collins Shop at Liberty and Maynard Sts. The store was located there until 1955 when it was moved to the present location at State and Liberty.
He was born Oct. 15, 1878 on the family farm in Saline Township, a son of Timothy P. and Elizabeth Pennington Collins. He attended the Ann Arbor schools and was graduated from Cleary College. He started his business career in Tecumseh with the Seaton Anderson Co. After coming to Ann Arbor in 1906 he became a buyer with the former Mack & Co. Department Store. He was associated with that firm for 22 years.
On Sept. 22, 1914, he married Magdalena Kuenzler. She died in 1917. On July 28, 1925, he married Reina Walther. She survives.
A member of First Methodist Church, for several years he served on the board of the YMCA, and as its president. He also was a former president and board member of the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce; and a member and former president of the board of the Merchants Association. He also served as supervisor from the city's First Ward for two terms. He also was a member of the city Board of Public Works for two terms.
