Street to bear name of pastor
The three blocks of Plum Street, which run between Pontiac Trail and Traver Street in northeast Ann Arbor, will now be known as John A. Woods Drive in honor of the veteran minister who died last November. A parade of fellow ministers, friends and members of the Bethel A.M.E. Church that Woods led for 25 years praised Woods at a public hearing Monday night prior to City Council’s unanimous vote favoring the renaming. “There are lots of quiet warriors in the community — Rev. Woods was one of these,” said former Mayor Al Wheeler, who called the renaming a nice gesture “to say to a citizen, ‘Farewell and thanks for a life well lived.’ ” First Ward Democratic council members Ann Marie Coleman and Larry Hunter, who co-sponsored the resolution, said all but one of the families living on Plum favor the change.
