Chronic kidney disease is a growing epidemic that affects 20 million people in the United States alone. Most people who have chronic kidney disease are not aware they have it. Furthermore, many people in the general public remain unaware of this epidemic and lacking information on what they must do to keep their kidneys healthy. This community outreach event will provide attendees with a basic understanding of:

  • The kidneys, their function, and how they work to keep a person healthy
  • The definition of ‘chronic kidney disease’
  • Risk factors for chronic kidney disease
  • How chronic kidney disease is diagnosed
  • Things people should do to keep their kidneys healthy

 

Julie Wright Nunes MD, MPH, is a kidney doctor and physician scientist at the University of Michigan Health System in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Nephrology. She also currently serves as faculty at the Ann Arbor VA Health System. She attained her medical doctorate and completed her medical residency at Wayne State University / Detroit Medical Center. She pursued nephrology fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and while there also obtained a Master’s Degree in Public Health.

Dr. Wright Nunes is currently funded by the NIH, to develop patient-centric education interventions across the continuum of CKD care aimed at improving clinical outcomes in patients. Her research has been published in multiple scientific journals and featured in the New York Times. She is a member of National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Nephrology. She is a member of the NIH, National Kidney Disease Education Program, Education Coordinating Panel, and serves on the American Kidney Fund Board of Trustees as well as chairing their Kidney Disease Prevention, Education & Outreach Committee.
