A tour of Hurón High Scñool was taken at 5:30 p.m. yesterday by members of the Ann Arbor Board of Education, the adïninistrative staff, and members of the secondary school Parent-Teacher Organization. o o Donald Newsted, past president of the Ann Arbor Education Association (AAEA), spoke last night during the "Questions, Comments and Petitions" portion of the school board meeting about the proposed 1969-70 budget He urged that Gov. William Milliken be invited to tour Ann Arbor Public Schools in the near future to see the innovative curricula in the system. Milliken criticized Michigan school sy sterns recently for not being innovative enough. Newsted also urged the board not to "renege' on the master contract agree ment concerning c 1 a s s sizes saying the quality of education would go "downhill" with larger classes. Increasing class sizes has been discussed by the board as a means of trimming the budget. o o A proposal for the Ann Arbor Board of Education to co-sponsor with the Community Center a Summer Day Camp from June 23 through Aug. 15 was discussed last night. Walter W. tíill, who would coordínate the camp, was present to explain the proposal. If the proposal is approved, the school board will furnish buses to the program for day trips. Trustee William C. Godfrey asked for a legal opinión on whether the school board may financially contribute by means of the buses) to the Community Center, which is a private, non-profit corporation. o o The school district's "gift" policy was discussed by the trustees last night. School Supt. W. Scott Westerman Jr. had said he was "uneasy" over the possible conflicts in gift policy which are subscribed to by the' board. A discussion revealed the board members were in favor of liberalizing the gift policy. Trustee Richard M. Wood suggested that a trust fund be established to receive larger gifts for the school system. o o Trustee Hazen J. Schumacher Jr. suggested that the Ann Arbor Board of Education particípate in a drive to initiate popular election of Washtenaw Intermedíate School District trustees.
