THE Si#th Conessional District includes the western portion of Washtenaw County and the population centers of Jackson and Lansing. It is a rejiggered district, being vacated by longtime Congressman Charles Chamberlain. Both major parties have primary contests in the Sixth. The Democrats are running M. Robert Carr and Charles P. Larrowe1. The Republicans in the race are Sen. William Ballenger, Jackson County Prosecutor Bruce Barton and East Lansing attorney Clifford W. I Tavlor. Carr is the, choice over Larrowe on the Democratie side of the ledger. Both have run for elective office bef ore, but Carr seems to have more balancea judgment and a better grasp the issues. For the Republicans, Bruce Barton easily has the catchiest slogan: "Working at government, not politics." That may not be good enough to catch Sen. Wil liam Ballenger, however, who has distinguished himself in the Legislature. He seems to be a young man in an awful hurry, but overall his credentials are good. Ballenger gets our vote, . OF more local interest is the, I cpntest for the 53rd district House J seat. This district includes most of Ann Arbor east of Seventh St. The seat is currently held by Rep. Perry Bullard, a first termer. Bullard is opposed in the Democratie primary by Elizabeth Taylor, county commissioner from District 15. Taylor has received some notoriety for refusing to pay her federal taxes, thus setting up the possibility that the voters of the 53rd might send someone to Lansing who is heading to jail instead. Her opponent, Mr. Bullard, has more than enough notonety 01 1 his own. In between the nonsense however, he shows signs of being a serious lawmaker. He sponsored an open meetings bilí that eventually was rendered feeble. He had a plan for setting up designated áreas for hitchhikers, an idea that makes sense given the random dangerous aspect of that form of transportation now. Bullard gete-the"nod over Elizabeth Taylor. Both are young, colorful and definitely out óf the ordinary, which should appeal immensely to many of the voters in the 53rd. ____
