High Tide for Aquaman!

by erin

If it appears that life is imitating HBO - well, maybe it is. In a news item similar to the storyline of last seasons Entourage actors with "incredible swimmer's bod[ies" are encouraged to apply. So goes a current casting notice for a possible WB series about underwater overachiever Aquaman, according to the fan site AquamanTV.com. Aquaman debuted in DC Comics in 1941--the adopted son (in some versions of the origin) of a lighthouse keeper who grows to learn his birthright lies in the submerged island of Atlantis. Befitting his name, Aquaman is at his best in the water, where he telepathically talks to fish, plays mind games with whales and spends time with a young charge called Aqualad. Smallville's Alfred Gough and Miles Millar will executive produce. Like their current WB series, the duo's Aquaman pilot will not be rife with capes, tights and codpiece accoutrements. Rather, the show will be a "grounded version of the Aquaman mythology," Gough told Daily Variety.

MC Otakon: Furuba

by Edith Wharton

Ohayo gozaimasu!
MC Otakon is back for another night of discussion, quizes, my home-made(okay, out of the box) brownies and Anime viewing. All the free books have been taken, but if you've read the series you are welcome to drop in to Malletts Creek on Wednesday night at 7pm. Be advised.. like AADL GT, I have a tendency to run overtime to watch an extra episode. And I prefer the sub, not the dub, much to certain fans' dismay.

Okay now to discussion of the books.. this week we're talking about 4-6. Some of my favorite moments after the break.

Eli Gets Jiggy

by john

"Why, oh why", you ask, "would we shut down the library for a full day?"

The answer is simple. So Eli and Eric could throw down the gauntlet and finally find out who the real DDR champion is (I'm not gonna tell you.. you have to judge for yourself).

Of course, the victor got to sing his own praises, Karaoke-Revolution style, later.

The Wheel of Time Keeps Rolling.. and Rolling

by Edith Wharton

Its been about a month since the latest Robert Jordan novel Knife of Dreams came out, and over a decade since Rand al'Thor arrived on the scene of fantasy literature. The Wheel of Time series spawned not only a cult following, but also a news network and a neverending plotline. I'm a fantasy reader myself and I loved them.. until about book 7, when I came to the realization that Jordan, like Chris Carter of the X-files, was not in control of his story. Spoilers(not explicit) after the break.

Nothing is more irritating in a series than when all of your favorite characters are being marginalized by the glut of new characters. And believe me, there are some great characters and interesting plots hiding in there somewhere. When Jordan knocked off a major character who shall remain unnamed, I realized she was one of the major reasons I was reading the series. Without her, the compass of story went awry. Which is probably why Jordan keeps hinting about bringing her back.

Apparently the newest installment recalls the better writing of the early books in the series, and brings certain plot lines to a well-deserved end. Does this mean the series is finally coming towards some sort of conclusion, or at least a semi-conclusion(with Jordan, can there ever be a real end?)?

And does anyone else wish Tor books would retire the burly midget cover art?

I can't honestly say I'll never pick up another Wheel of Time novel. Maybe when Jordan finally finishes the series, maybe then I'll return to see if The Dark One ever does get vanquished.

AADL-GT Round 3 Results

by eli

Round 3 is behind us, and with Round 4 fast approaching, at long last, here are the full results from the October tournament.

Round 3 began with Super Smash Brothers Single-player melee, with 80 competitors registered. With 3 qualifying matches per player, and our systems running smoothly, we had time for seeded 1v1 eliminations, which worked out quite well. In the semifinals, Round 1 Melee Champion [gtplayer:136] was bested by [gtplayer:355], season leader [gtplayer:143] was beaten by [gtplayer:427], [gtplayer:357] fell to emerging force [gtplayer:326], and [gtplayer:396] was beaten by his own big brother, the right honourable [gtplayer:325]. The final match was a vicious 4-player melee, with [gtplayer:325] again proving his Melee Mastery, [gtplayer:326] taking second, [gtplayer:427] taking third, and [gtplayer:355] finishing fourth.

Is Wal-Mart Good For America?

by amy

Today on Talk of the Nation guests discussed Wal-Mart's recent efforts to improve its public image in the wake of criticism over treatment of workers and an apparently scathing new documentary titled Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price (on order). While you're waiting for the new DVD, you may want to try the 2004 PBS Frontline title Is Wal-mart Good for America?, left.
