Fire apparently caused by a discarded cigaret caused $15,000 worth of damage last night at Hollis House, a University League house located at 1805 Washtenaw Ave. Sixteen girls living at the house were evacuated safely. The fire apparently started in a pantry and swept into the living room, shown here. (Story on page 13)

Where League House Fire Started: The fire-damaged pantry shown above was where a blaze started that caused an estimated $15,000 worth of damage to a University League house last night. The fire swept to other portions of the house and drove out 16 University coeds rooming there. The house was Hollis House, located at 1805 Washtenaw Ave. It is owned by William Freeman. Smoke Draws Crowd: A huge pillar of smoke attracted hundreds of spectators to the scene of a fire in a Sears, Roebuck & Co., warehouse in the 300 block of W. Washington St. at 10:40 this morning. From vantage spots atop the nearby city parking structure and the Ann Arbor Railroad tracks, as well as on the street, they watched firemen extinguish the blaze. The heat generated by the fire caused utility wires overhead to sag.

Flames Paint Ann Arbor Sky: Showers of sparks, flying brands and flames that reached a height of 100 feet marked this spectacular fire at the old Lansky junk yard building at Detroit and N. Division Sts. early this morning. The picture was taken just after the collapse of the frame front wall (left) of White's Farm Store. Silhouetted against the burning building in the front left foreground is the Fire Department ladder truck. Hose from this vehicle sprayed second story windows.

The red sky above this blazing building (left) was visible 15 miles as flames filled the 75-year-old structure and threatened 15 adjacent frame homes at Detroit and Beakes Sts. near N. Division St. Residents of the dwelling at the right were evacuated, but the vigilance of the firemen and a slight change in the wind saved the house.

Division is watched by fascinated spectators shortly after 1:30 a.m. this morning as firemen spray the building itself and an adjacent home (far right) with powerful hoses. Fire Chief Benjamin J. Zahn said that the fire may have started in the area behind a neon sign.
