Another curb will be bent around the base of a tree when workmen widening S. Fourth Ave. reach the elm (left) in front of the YWCA. Sidestepping construction something like the example at right (on Eighth St. between W. Liberty and W. Washington Sts.) will be necessary -- thanks to the City Council's spare-that-tree action last night. The Public Works Department had ruled that the tree in front of the YWCA must go to preserve a straight cub line. But the Council, which has intervened previously in behalf of ill-placed trees, ruled that the elm shall live and the curb shall bend.

AACHM Oral History: Gwendolyn Calvert Baker

Gwendolyn Calvert Baker was born in 1931. She talks about growing up in Ann Arbor where she began her distinguished career teaching at Wines Elementary and winning Teacher of the Year. She was also faculty at the University of Michigan’s School of Education; National Executive Director of the YWCA; a member of the New York School Board; and president and CEO of United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
