Kids, Stay Out Of Leaves In Street! Leaves can be fun to play in -- but not in a city street, Ann Arbor police have been telling local children. Motorists many times cannot see small children half-covered with leaves and one child has already been struck by a car and slightly injured while playing in a leaf pile, officers say. City Traffic Patrolman Patrick Nolan, who gives safety talks to elementary school children, holds a handful of leaves at a curb on a city street and the camera angle by News Photographer Jack Stubbs shows how invisible a child would be to a person in the scout car in the background.

Traffic is moving again under the Maynard St. carport addition one way from south to north between E. William and E. Liberty, which is the reverse of the previous pattern before the street was closed. The permanent move which went into effect on Wednesday, is an effort to eliminate the bottleneck on William between Maynard and State, according to John Robbins, director of parking and traffic engineering. The six-story addition, which extends over Jacobson's department store, will provide parking for an additional 284 cars.

Packard Rd., shown here in a view toward the east near Buhr Park, will eventually be a five-lane pavement along this stretch although workmen are currently working only on widening the thoroughfare to four lanes. The City Council has authorized the purchase of land on the north side of Packard to enable construction of the fifth lane sometime in the future. Workmen are now installing the curb and gutter along the south side (right) of Packard while cars are using the old pavement. The Packard widening project is expected to be completed sometime in November.

Block Check: Lt. H. G. Schlupe, head of the Ann Arbor Police Department Traffic Bureau, checks the string of plastic blocks which have been laid for a crosswalk at Ann and Main Sts. The two round discs visible near the blocks are metal pieces which were used in former years to mark the cross-walk. Summer heat and heavy traffic have shifted these two discs some distance from their original line.
