Make Tracks to the Tractors

Fun for everyone at the Antique Gas Engine and Tractor Show at Hudson Mills Metropark beginning Friday, June 1 at 6 p.m. through Sunday, June 3rd. They’ll be pulling and showing tractors all weekend and there’s even a tractor pull for the little ones on Saturday.

Summer is as good a time for a tearjerker as any and Redbud Productions has a doozy for you. Steel Magnolias is a comedy-drama about the bond among a group of southern women in northwest Louisiana. Although the main storyline involves Shelby, her mother, and Shelby's medical battles, the underlying group-friendship among all six women is prominent throughout the play. And at Truvy's beauty salon all the ladies who are anybody come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager but clumsy new assistant, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice. Dinosaur Jr. at the Blind Pig

Did you wear flannel shirts and Doc Martens in the early 90's? Do you strongly identify as a Generation Xer? Then, you'll be happy to know that Dinosaur Jr., the indie rock band from the 90's, will be in Ann Arbor June 3rd and 4th at the Blind Pig. The original members recently reunited for a new album, their first since 1988, and are now on the road. However, if you're expecting a greatest hits set, you'll be a bit disappointed. The band is said to be primarily performing from their latest album, Beyond. So leave your flannel at home and discover something new. Doors open at 9:30 pm starting with Michigan band, Awesome Color.
Meanwhile check out their last album before they dissolved the name Dinosaur Jr. in 1997 as well as the book, Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground. Dinosaur Jr. is just one of the many bands chronicled in the book.

The Performance Network concludes its 25th regular season with Amadeus by Peter Shaffer. Reviews have been good. This version is a culmination of rewrites by the author over many years and finalized in 1998. It is neither the Amadeus of 1981 nor the film of 1984. Starring and directed by Malcolm Tulip, this is of course the story of Salieri who is consumed with jealousy of the genius Mozart in the royal court of Joseph II in Vienna. Through June 10. 663-0681.

Kristin Hersh at The Ark

Kristin Hersh, former lead singer of the Throwing Muses and current leader of 50 Foot Wave, will be performing some of her solo work Thurs., May 24th at 8 pm at The Ark. Known for her work in the alternative post-punk scene, Hersh is now known for her songwriting and poetic innovation. She's even got a blog!

Orchid Lovers to Meet at Matthei Botanical Gardens

Orchid lovers might wish to attend the next meeting of the Ann Arbor Orchid Society at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 20 at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, 1800 N. Dixboro Road. Eric Christensen, author and expert on vandaceous and Peruvian orchids, orchid taxonomy and orchid culture will speak on South American Slipper orchids and their habitats. Genealogy Workshop at Washtenaw Community College

If you're just starting a family history project or if you have already had some experience in conducting genealogy research, a special workshop offered by the Richard W. Bailey Library at Washtenaw Community College should be of interest to you. 'Tracing Your Roots: Do You Really Know Who You Are?' will be held on Friday, June 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon at the Towsley Auditorium in the Morris Lawrence Building on the WCC campus.
Featured speakers include Wally & Doris Patrick [LDS Ann Arbor Area Family History Library]; Kris Rzepczynski [Library of Michigan]; and Bobbie Snow
[longtime genealogical researcher]. Topics included are: Genealogy Resources, Census Records, Vital Records, Immigrant Ancestors, African-American Genealogy and Internet Genealogy Resources. Oscar Wilde famously said, "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." The stars are out now at the Michigan Classical Repertory Theater for Lady Windermere's Fan, Oscar Wilde's sharp-edged 1891 comedy about a Victorian archmoralist. Like many of his comedies, it is a biting satire on the morals of Victorian society, particularly marriage. When a woman with a shady past makes a play for Lady Windermere's husband, how is she supposed to respond? Oscar Wilde explores the hypocrisy of public morality compared with genuine, private kindness.

The Play Ground has seen outstanding films at the Lenore Marwil Detroit Jewish Film Festival for five years and we are thrilled that the new season is beginning on Sunday, May 6 and continuing through Thursday at the Michigan Theater, showing a whopping 19 films The event is one of five (the others are in Commerce Township, Flint, Birmingham and Windsor) that constitute the Lenore Marwil Jewish Film Festival. One goal of Ann Arbor's Jewish Community Center is to transmit Jewish education and Jewish identity and Jewish learning through film. Another goal should be to deliver great entertainment. Mission accomplished.
