THE VERY FIRST ASSIGNMENT: Kindergartners were asked to sit at their little knee-high-to-an-adult tables and draw whatever they wanted to on sheets of manila paper. Many of the drawings came out as houses, misshapen dogs and cats, and others just came out. Here, Susan Klebsattel, left, and Connie Clague work on the problem at hand.

In this class, taught by Miss Jeanne Wright, pupils responded by joining a circle on the floor around the piano. First question asked by the teacher was "What day of the week is this?" Nobody knew; but everyone agreed it was Thursday after Miss Wright suggested it.
