AACHM Oral History: Dolores and James Turner

Dolores Preston Turner was born in Ann Arbor in the early 1940s, and her family lived in a small historically Black neighborhood on Woodlawn Avenue. She graduated from Ann Arbor High School, where she met her future husband, James Turner. She remembers moving into their first apartment in Pittsfield Village as a result of fair housing protests in Ann Arbor in the 1960s. Turner has two master’s degrees and she taught English at Huron High School for 30 years. Dolores and James celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September 2021.

Serving two-thirds of Pittsfield Village, Pittsfield Park and all of the township east of US-23 between Packard Rd. and Washtenaw Ave. and Oak Park and Washtenaw Heights Subdivisions north of the Central Ave., the drain will connect with the Ann Arbor trunkline near Hogback Rd. and Huron River Dr. The Ginno Innai Construction Co. of Dearborn is doing the work, financed by a 20-year bond issue. The picture was taken between Pittsfield Park and US-23.

Moss, stooping behind the homemade "locomotive," fashioned it from an oil drum and various other odds and ends. The cab's instrument panel features surplus airplane dials, one of which operates a headlight on the front of the "engine."
