University To Join Other Institutions At New Atomic Center
Territory in Du Page County, Ill., was today acquired by the new Argonne National Laboratory for atomic energy research, the facilities of which will be used by University of Michigan scientists along with 24 other academic and research institutions in the mid-west.
During the war years the laboratory was located some four miles from the present in Argonne Forest park, Cook County, Ill. The new site is approximately 30 miles west of Chicago.
Construction will begin as soon as weather conditions permit, according to Dr. Farrington Daniels, chairman of the laboratory board of governors.
Prof. Ernest F. Barker, chairman of the University physics department and member of the council of participating institutions which elects the laboratory board of governors, declared that participation does not require any financial contribution from the University. The federal government has provided all funds.
The laboratory will serve as a center for the development of all phases of atomic energy. Members of the University staff and graduate students in science will be able to use the facilities of the laboratory, subject to approval by the board of governors necessary for each project.
