South Lyon Couple Will Observe Golden Wedding

SOUTH LYON — Tuesday will mark the golden wedding anniversary of Mayor and Mrs. James B. Calhoun, who were married at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Furman of Ithaca, parents of Mrs. Calhoun, on Aug. 21, 1901.

Mrs. Calhoun's mother, Mrs. Emma Furman, who celebrated her 101st birthday on April 19, 1951, lives with her daughter.

The couple came to South Lyon and began housekeeping in the Darling house on Wells St. and later moved to the Furman home on E. Lake St. They bought their present home at 516 E. Lake St. in 1916.

Born At Wixom

Mr. Calhoun was born on July 9, 1874, at Wixom, a son of David and Mary Calhoun. He lived there for 24 years and then came to South Lyon, where he was employed by the Grand Trunk and Pere Marquette Railroads as an operator and agent for 18 years.

He bought the Charles Everett Coal Yard from Mr. Everett in 1915 and operated it until 1946.

He has served as mayor of the community for the past nine years and is also a member of the Board of Supervisors of Oakland county. He was formerly a member of the City Council.

Mrs. Calhoun, who was born in Detroit, taught for several years at Walled Lake and at the Stone School, where her mother had also taught.

Both are members of the First Presbyterian Church of South Lyon.

The Calhouns are on a short trip for their anniversary.
