Elks Convention Here To Feature Sunday Parade
5,000 Delegates And Families Are Expected
Some 5,000 delegates and their families will be in Ann Arbor this weekend for the 36th annual convention of the Michigan State Association of the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World (IBPOEofW)
Registration for the convention began today at the Ann Arbor Community Center. Meetings will be held in the center, the Bethel AME Church, the Second Baptist Church, and the Elks Home at 220 Sunset Rd.
Highlighting the four-day event will be a parade beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday. Bands, floats and marching units from Elks lodges and temples all over the state will participate.
The parade will begin at Ann Arbor High School, proceed to White St., to Henry St., to S. State St., to Packard Ave., to Main St., to W. Summit St. and will end at W. Summit and Daniel Sts.
Hosts for the convention are Pratt Lodge NO. 322 and Daisy Chain Temple No. 212, both of Ann Arbor. Rupert Trimmingham and Mrs. Nellie Monamus are host exalted ruler and daughter ruler, respectively.
Business meetings opened at the Community Center. Mayor Cecil O. Creal will welcome delegates at a program at 7 p.m. today in Bethel AME Church. A civil liberties will be held at 8:30 p.m. today at the center.
Tomorrow will be Grace Byrant Day, in honor of the long-time president of the group's women’s auxiliary.
An oratorical contest for high school students is set for 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Second Baptist Church. The winner will receive a $500 college scholarship.
Business meetings will continue Saturday in the Community Center. A grand ball will be held in the center at 9 p.m. Saturday.
At 11 a.m. Sunday, the IBPOE’s shrine department will meet in the Elks Home. A juniors’ reception will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday in the center.
Among the speakers at the convention will be Judge Hobson R. Reynolds of Philadelphia, Pa., grand exalted ruler of the grand lodge; and John H. Burns of Detroit, president of the state association.
