Decontamination efforts discussed
The City of Ann Arbor will host a public meeting Wednesday about efforts to remove a probable carcinogen from groundwater in west Ann Arbor. The meeting will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Slauson Middle School, 1019 W. Washington St.
Officials from the state Department of Environmental Quality are also expected to be at the meeting to answer questions about 1,4 dioxane.
The solvent was found in residential wells west of the city in the mid-1980s. Pall Life Sciences, a Scio Township medical filter maker, has been working to clean the dioxane from groundwater for six years. It seeped into groundwater after it was stored in lagoons and sprayed over lawns at the Wagner Road facility.
In February 2001, it turned up in a municipal well on the city’s west side. The well has since been taken offline.
