Decorated Veteran Dies At 57
George R. Cromwell, 57, of 2133 N. Circle, a much decorated Army veteran of World War II and lifelong Ann Arbor resident, died Sunday at Ann Arbor Veteran's Hospital following a long illness.
S/Sgt. Cromwell was awarded two bronze stars, the Purple Heart and European, North African and Middle East Service medals following service in those theaters of action during World War II.
He was credited with saving all but two of 40 U. S. soldiers trapped by a superior force in Italy during that war by exposing himself to the enemy and leading an attack on the opposing force's flanks.
Sgt. Cromwell was born on July 8, 1914, in Ann Arbor, a son of Charles and Ethel Turner Cromwell. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church, the Kenneth Fox Post Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Elks Pratt Lodge.
He and Zettie Davenport were married in May, 1957. She preceded him in death. He then married Katherine Mason in June, 1963, in Toledo, Ohio. She survives.
Other survivors include a step-daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Tidal) Mitchell of Ann Arbor; a step-son, Ernest Delco Jr. of Mattapan, Mass.; three step-granddaughters and three step-grandsons; a sister, Mrs. John (Lydia) Morton of Ann Arbor; and several aunts, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ann Arbor's Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Emmett L. Green officiating. Burial will follow in United Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the Staffan Funeral Home, and at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday when the body will lie in state.
