Emmett Cox (left) and Carl Carter, second graders in Mrs. Jean Kelsey's Bach School class, put the finishing touches on their "Big Fat Pumpkin Man." The youngsters' Halloween friend was a class project and the subject of the following poem, entitled "The Big Fat Pumpkin Man," which was composed by the class: Mr. Pumpkin Man From Pumpkin Town; He's so fat he must sit down. We think he's jolly full of fun; On Halloween night he can't make us run.

PLENTY OF CANS - A total of 159 canned goods and one large pumpkin earned this class the victory for the most goods collected at Huron High School. In an effort to increase donations for the annual Salvation Army Canned Food Drive, the Huron High School Sisters Club, sponsor of the drive, came up with the idea of an all-school competition. The winners, members of Moe Abrahams first hour class, are: front row, from left, Chuck Damm, Nickie Smith, David Pehlke and Matt Schmidt. Back row: Monica Morton, Joyce Hunter, Abrahams, Sam Cox and Nolan Frederick. Huron High alone collected over 10 boxes of food and thousands of canned items were received from throughout the Ann Arbor schools. The goods will be distributed to needy area families, along with checks for perishable items, so that all can have a hearty Christmas meal.

PEDIGREED PUMPKIN - This giant orb, weighing in at 222 pounds, is rooted in hefty tradition. Grower Linda LeBlanc of Belleville bought the seeds from a Nova Scotia grower who is listed in the Guinness Book of Records for his beefy pumpkins. LeBlanc has been growing big pumpkins to sell as 'conversation pieces' for the last three years. This one, displayed at the Ypsilanti Farmers' Market on Saturday, was priced at $50. LeBlanc will hold her own 'pumpkin factory' Oct. 1-31 at her farm at 16421 Elwell Road in Belleville. The Halloween theme will include pumpkins, cider, Halloween masks, candy and pumpkin pie.

Down at Jorgensen's Farm, 12671 Carpenter Rd. in Milan, there are 35 acres of pumpkins just waiting to be turned into jack-o-lanterns for that scary holiday coming up at the end of next week. Making sure they got the pick of the crop Saturday were the Kryscynski family, Davey and Jamie and father Al. But obviously they left plenty for anyone else who'd like to pick one right off the vine. The Jorgensens also have gourds and Indian corn available to add to your autumn decor. More pick-your-own opportunities will be listed in our Harvest Food Guide on Wednesday.
