Fred Wolkert of 227 Murray Ave., and Patrolman Walter DeDula examine one of the three manhole covers blown more than 40 feet into the air in a telephone conduit explosion near S. Seventh and W. Washington Sts. about 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The covers were estimated to weigh more than 50 pounds apiece. Bell Telephone workmen at the scene said that an accumulation of gas was probably touched off by a short-circuit in one of the cables. The manholes affected were located at S. Seventh and W. Washington Sts., S. Seventh at Liberty St., and at Murray Ave. and W. Washington St.
