Vehicles Navigate Six-Street Intersection Near Broadway Bridge, March 1966 Photographer: Duane Scheel

Confusion is the best word to describe this intersection on the city's near north side where no fewer than six streets converge. The multiple intersection, where Broadway, Division, Beakes, Depot, Detroit and Summit met, is included for improvements in the $5,362,000 roads bond issue facing voters at Monday's election. City officials say the $150,000 in the bond issue for this intersection will enable the city to dissolve some of the confusion and traffic congestion that occurs daily here. The Broadway Bridge, from where this picture was taken, is scheduled for widening by the State Highway Department this year and will also help alleviate the congestion problem. Broadway is the main route into the downtown area for persons living on the city's north-east side while Division is a main north-south route.

Intersection of Packard, Division and Madison, March 1966 Photographer: Duane Scheel

Another major point of traffic conflict in the city is this intersection where Packard, Division and Madison cross paths. This intersection is also included in the $5,362,000 bond issue facing voters at Monday's election. City officials, if the bond issue passes, will use $165,000 to improve this intersection. Plans call for street widening and the installation of turning lanes. This picture was taken looking northwest on Packard, the street running left to right being E. Madison and the other being S. Division. Packard is also scheduled for other improvements: it would be extended to Ashley and First as a bypass route of the downtown business section; it would also be widened from E. Stadium to Carpenter Rd. These improvements will make Packard a more heavily traveled street.
