ANN ARBOR'S 1,000TH GIRL SCOUT: Miss Barbara Gustine, 1,000th person to register with the Ann Arbor Girl Scout organization, adjusts her new Brownie cap which she is entitled to wear as a member of the local group. Miss Gustine is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Neil Gustine of 421 Highland Rd. She is a member of the Angell School Brownie Troop whose registration with the Ann Arbor Girl Scouts brought membership in the local organization to 1,014.

Representative of the 21 Brownies who became Girl Scouts in "flying-up" ceremonies conducted last night by Troop No. 37 at Mack School, Barbara Lou Sevebeck, 9, left, and Mary Cook, also 9, receive scout badges from Mrs. Nelson Rathburn, troop-leader. To make the jump from Brownie to Girl Scout, a girl must pass certain home-making and out-of-door tests, learn Girl Scouting lore, and be at least in the fourth grade of school.

Nancy Markham Becomes A Brownie Scout While In Hospital, November 1949

With her left leg in a traction splint, little Nancy Markham became a Brownie scout in Troop 38 during special bedside ceremonies at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital yesterday. Nancy, whose home is at 3016 Brockman Blvd., broke her leg five weeks ago, but Mrs. Carl Connable, second from left, the troop leader, has tutored her in Brownie lore each week at the hospital. Other troop officers present, from the left, were Carol Sinn, president; Judy Connable, treasurer; and Kay Velker, vice-president. Nancy was one of 11 girls who became Brownies in Troop 38. Troops 47 and 49 received ten new Brownies each in ceremonies yesterday.
