'U' To Ask For Campus Armory

Ruthven Announces Plans For Request To U. S.

Dr Alexander G. Ruthven, University president, said today the University will make application to the War Department next week for erection of an armory on the campus to house units of Army and Naval ROTC.

Armory plans drafted several years ago will be revised, he said, by a faculty military affairs committee which will meet Monday to prepare estimate of construction cost and consider selection of a possible site.

A naval ROTC unit to train at least 100 students in the first year has been established on the campus and will receive its first batch of enrollees Sept. 30. Military ROTC has trained Michigan students for a number of years on a voluntary enlistment basis.

Dr. Ruthven said the University is prepared to spend considerable time this school year co-ordinating its efforts in the national defense program. Several faculty men already have been called by the government for expert service, he said, and the University is prepared to meet government requests for personnel in a more orderly way than in the World war era

"The whole defense matter will our first attention at least for the first few months.” he said.
