‘Riding Ring’ Hospital

Among the nurses caring for wounded men in a "former riding ring in France," now housing the 36th General hospital, is Lt. Helen S. Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert J. Staebler of 7734 Plymouth Rd.

In this huge riding ring, where full-blooded horses of a French cavalry school once passed in review, the largest orthopedic ward in the European theater of war is now in operation.

After installation of the 520-bed ward, there was still room for the construction of offices, lavatories and storerooms and the erection of a large two-sided movie screen in the center which allows all patients to see "the shows” nightly.

Lt. Martin, a graduate of Sparrow hospital in Lansing, has been with the 36th ever since it was organized.

In California

The Public Relations office at San Francisco has announced the arrival of Pvt. H. Ileen Pickrem, formerly of 408 E. Kingsley St., among the first 50 Wacs to he placed on duty at Letterman General hospital.

A member of the WAC Medical unit, Pvt. Pickrem took her basic training at Fort Des Moines, Ia., and received medical instructions at Beaumont General hospital in Texas and at La Garde General hospital in New Orleans.

Her  parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pickrem, live in Milan.

Joins Nurse Corps

Sixth Service Command in Chicago has announced the appointment of Patricia Lamers Chute to the Army Nurse Corps with the rank of second lieutenant. She has been assigned to Camp McCoy, Wis., as of April 26.

A graduate of Ontario hospital. London. Canada, Lt. Chute has been attending the University of Michigan. Her husband, Ralph MacDonald Chute, lives in Hillsdale.

Promoted

The War department has announced the promotion of Veronica M. Savinski, Army nurse, to first lieutenant.

Last week, at the same time her brother, Pvt. Robert Savinski, was home on furlough from his post in Mississippi, she visited her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Savinski of Ypsilanti, and has since returned to her new station at Randolph Field. Tex.

Back in September, 1943, when Italy's surrender was announced, Lt. Savinski was located on Sicily and was able to observe the great celebration and joy of Sicilians over their liberation. She also had been in North Africa and altogether served on foreign sod for a total of 16 months before returning to this country.

A graduate nurse of St. Joseph's Mercy hospital, Lt. Savinski enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in August, 1942, and was trained at Selfridge Field and Bowman Field, Ky., as well as in Florida before she was shipped overseas.

On Desert For Year

After spending a year at the Marine Corps Air Station, El Centro, Calif., where the temperature reaches 122 degrees quite frequently Marine Ida M. Stitt, recently promoted to sergeant, is still waiting for a transfer.

Sgt. Stitt received boot training at Camp Lejeune, N. C., and attended aerology school at Lakehurst, N. J., before being assigned to her present location.

A graduate of the University of Michigan where she worked part-time in the William L. Clements library, the feminine marine sergeant taught school at Ovid, Mich., two years prior to enlisting, June 15, 1943.

At Des Moines

Pvt. Doris R. Dean, Wac, 23-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Spar, 1467 Rosewood St., has just enjoyed a short furlough at home and ts now at Des Memos, Iowa for special overseas training.

A member of the Third Air Force, Pvt. Dean was graduated from the Clerks school at Ft. Des Moines and has been serving at Will Rogers Field, Okla., as a clerk and typist.

A graduate of Ann Arbor High school, class of 1940, Pvt. Dean was employed in the payroll office at Willow Run before entering the service.

Home On Furlough

A member of the Marine Corps Women's Reserve, until recently stationed at a San Francisco depot of supplies, Pfc. Alice L. Morrison, is spending a furlough with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry G. Morrison at 311 N. Ashley St.

Before entering the service last September, Pfc. Morrison attended the University for a year and later was employed at a Detroit Industrial Plant. She will he located at Camp Leieune, N. C., after her vacation ends on May 11.

Enters Nurse Corps

A registered nurse, Marjorie Beth Sodt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben W. Sodt of Sharon township, who enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps with the rank of second lieutenant reported April 26 at Camp McCoy, Wis., for basic training.

After graduating from the Chelsea High school in the class of 1935, Lt. Sodt attended Nurse's Training school at Foote hospital, Jackson, completing the course in 1939.

For the past two years she has been employed as industrial nurse at Kelsey-Hayes Wheel Co., Jackson, and has been living at an R. F. D. address, Manchester.
