One-room school to be protected

A little red schoolhouse which has been a landmark in Ann Arbor Township for more than 100 years has been named a “historic district” by the Board of Commissioners. The designation will protect Popkins School, which sits on a 23-acre lot at Plymouth and Earhart Roads, from alterations which would change its historical character. The one-room school, which most recently has been used as a residence, had 60 students in 1870 when it was built in the then highly rural community at a cost of approximately $1,500. As many as three generations of families attended the school.
