Legacies Project Oral History: Jacqueline Heubel

Jacqueline Heubel was born in 1930 in Fond du Lac Wisconsin in the midst of the Great Depression. When her father regained his job on the railroad, her family moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College and the University of Minnesota School of Dental Hygiene. After a few years working as a dental hygienist, she returned to teaching. Huebel taught in the Pontiac School District during the Civil Rights Era, and recalls the effects of integration on teachers and students.

Jacqueline Heubel was interviewed as part of an internship at Applied Safety and Ergonomics in Ann Arbor in 2008 as part of the Legacies Project.

CLEANUP RESULTS IN UNIQUE VEHICLE: This is what happens when people clean out their basements for spring trash pickup, or at least what happened when City Attorney Peter W. Forsythe of 1205 Olivia cleaned his last weekend. The basement treasures, two tricycles and a toy tractor, were welded together to make room for his four children and a friend. Riding the "silly bike" as the children call it, are from left, Linda Forsythe, Carl Wolf, David Forsythe, Martha and Jim Forsythe. No attempt to patent the vehicle has been reported.

Mayor Doing HIs Thing Mayor Robert J. Harris is aiding, in a minor way, the city's traffic and parking congestion problems, and also reducing city costs for gas mileage for City Council members. His bicycle is shown in the mayor's parking spot in the garage beneath City Hall, a means of transportation he uses when it doesn't rain. It is believed Harris is the first mayor of Ann Arbor to use this means of transportation to get to City Hall regularly -- at least the first since the automobile became an accepted form of transportation here.
