Down The Drain - Yesterday was liquor disposal day at the Ann Arbor Police Department. Three rubbish barrels jammed with beer and whiskey, confiscated in criminal cases, were hauled to a sewer drain. Each can and bottle was carefully opened by Uniformed Lt. Robert Whitaker, (left) and Police Cadet Melvin Roper who poured the contents into the drain. An investigator from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission was present for the disposal procedure.

The intoxicants are part of a hoard of partly filled bottles of beverages confiscated by city officers in arrests over a six-month period. The spirits are poured down the drain in the presence of an investigator from the state's Michigan Liquor Control Commission.

Beer 'Bust': State Liquor Control Commission Investigator Michael Pekrul, left, and Ann Arbor Police Detective Lt. Eugene L. Staudenmaier pour the first of 349 12-ounce bottles of beer down a drain at the rear of City Hall. The beer, in addition to 12 pints of whiskey, 16 bottles of wine and a quarter barrel of beer, was dumped yesterday into the drain as part f a routine police procedure in disposing of confiscated intoxicants. A state liquor detective is required to attend such dispositions.
