Joe Rodriguez, fifth from the left, first row, thumbs hooked in pockets, was one of the 18 survivors of E Company who made it to the top of the Mount Suribachi and had their picture taken by Associated Press Photographer Joe Rosenthal in 1945. Moments later Rosenthal took the famous flag-raising shot, shown in insert. The company was in the second wave of Marines to hit the Iwo Jima each and lost 130 men in the first four days of fighting.

She poses here with Joseph E. Edwards, president of Edwards Brothers, Inc., which for the past five years has produced the posters for the local chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis without charge. Martha Ann, stricken with polio when four days old, was left with both arms and legs completely paralyzed. She has recovered full use of her left arm and has partial use of the other limbs. She is still receiving treatment with funds donated by givers to the annual March of Dimes drive.

Dimes Support Respirator Center - Among the many facets of the fight against polio supported by this month's March of Dimes is the Respirator Center at University Hospital, where youngsters like 19-month-old Bobby Snyder of Hillsdale are treated. Bobby was brought to the center when only six weeks old and kept in an iron lung for eight months. He is now being taught to stand, and it is hoped he may learn to walk, although he must wear a heavy corset with a neck extension and leg braces. Looking on are Mrs. Douglas Gregory, head of the county chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis; Mrs. Robert S. Smashed Trains Locked Together: Wreckage of the 70-car freight train and the New York Central's Wolverine passenger train which collided last night in Dexter (top picture) shows how the trains were crushed together in the crash. Some of the cars had to be pried apart. Seven persons were injured. Lower picture [this photo], taken today while a work train (smoke in the background) was putting cars back on the tracks, shows how far the Wolverine left its tracks. The passenger train's engine skidded along until it struck the switch where the group of men is standing, then bounced back toward its own track. Main line tracks are just visible at extreme right in picture. (Other pictures on pages 7, 10 and 15.)

Lumbard of 1319 Wells St., is city chairman for the 1948 dimes drive which ends today. Helps March Of Dimes - George Anderson, 232 Murray Ave., wears a big smile as he holds the March of Dimes canister which he filled so quickly and well that he won a five-dollar prize from Stofflet News Co. George collected $42.77 for the March of Dimes campaign in the space of three hours and thereby topped all 22 of his newsboy friends who were in the contest. He thinks his collection will help March of Dime campaigners who are raising money for the fight against infantile paralysis.

Perform To Fight Polio - These five performers in a neighborhood "circus" raised $2.15 for the fight against polio. Staged for friends and neighbors in the 800 block of Princeton Ave., the circus featured (left to right) Coriene Hedel, 8, Tippy, Patricia Kuohn, 10, Wendy Manausa, 9, and Katherine Lyke, 11. The girls decided to give to the polio fund because Patricia is a former victim of the disease. Other donations made later swelled the girls' polio fund to $11.74.

It contains $840 for the March of Dimes drive in dime folders and special gifts. A total of $4,170 has been collected to date from such mail. The drive will continue through Jan. 31. Mrs. Goldman is treasurer for the Ann Arbor drive, and Mrs. Riggs is chairman of the dime card collection.

Easter Seal dollars also help in the rehabilitation of young and old patients in other hospitals in the county, at Rackham School at Ypsilanti and in various homes. One Way To Contribute To Paralysis Fund: As one phase of the four-way campaign in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw county to raise funds for the war against infantile paralysis, coin collection boxes similar to, but smaller than, the display size model shown in the above photograph, have been placed in public buildings, banks, stores and schools in every community in the county. Any amount, from one cent up, may be dropped in the boxes. Half of the sum raised will go to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, Inc., for research and half will be returned to Washtenaw to aid local victims. In the above picture are Mrs. James S. Gault (left), chairman of the campaign in the schools, and Mrs. Bradley Patten (right), who is in charge of the coin collectors. The campaign will continue through this week.
